Review: Chanel Shanghai Show

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

3rd December 2009, Chanel launched Paris – Shanghai a special winter 2009/2010 collection, which was inspired by Chinese cinema of the 30s, Imperial court dresses, traditional Mandarin gowns and  Chinese uniforms.
The show started with Lagerfeld’s new film “A fantasy trip – Coco Chanel’s journey to Shanghai”. A persiflage in four chapters, which is based on China cliches from a western point of view.  Themes like the Chinese Emperor, cultural revolution, uniforms and concubines weren’t up to expectations of the Chinese audience.

On seeing Mao at Tiananmen Square:
“Gee it’s big. Yeah, I painted Mao about four hundred times. I used to see how many I could do in a day. I love his book. I read it all the time. I like the simple thoughts.” Andy Warhol, 1982.
